Art Gallery Reception & Sushi

The mister and I met up with a good girl friend and attended a reception at Valley House Gallery for paintings and drawings by SMU professor Barnaby Fitzgerald, titled Interdictions and Extuitions. We viewed a number of large, impressive oil paintings and a larger quantity of gorgeous egg tempera paintings and drawings, all expressing some qualities of classical Italian imagery and the artist’s own conceptual significance. The brushstrokes in the egg tempera works on panel demonstrate so much delicacy and precision, while the drawings present beauty in simplicity with the supreme intentionality of each brush, charcoal, or pencil mark. My time studying under Fitzgerald in painting and drawing ranks highly among the study experiences which truly had an impact on my aesthetic and ability.

Garments: silk Ann Taylor Loft blouse, from Revente / Ann Taylor wool blend pencil, from Northpark store

Shoes: studded mid-heel Stuart Weitzman pumps, from Revente

Accessories: patent waist belt, borrowed from my Kensie dress / purple leather Fossil hobo, from Dillard’s / heirloom plastic leaf necklace / verdigris brass We Dream in Colour earrings, from their webstore / La Mer Collections wrap watch / assorted bracelets and rings

We wandered through the sculpture garden on the grounds before heading out to get some dinner. It felt so humid, plus extreme crowding in the gallery, so I ended up doing some un-ladylike sweating. We come from Texas, though, so we have learned to deal with it (I carry blotting papers in my purse every day, for one). Aaron wanted some casual grub, like bar food, but I talked him into Japanese food from Otaru in Addison for some $20 all you can eat, made-to-order sushi. Over rolls galore (veggie, spider, philadelphia, fire snapper, rainbow, etc), teriyaki chicken, and gyoza, we chatted about the exhibition, our recent lives, and the hilarity of the derp derp movement. In that vein: ermahgerd, lerk, berterfurl ert!

One of my favorite pieces in the gallery, an egg tempera painting titled Porfirio.

The exhibition will remain up until Sept. 29th, with an artist talk scheduled on 9/8 at 11 am. I highly recommend both the show and the adjoining sculpture garden (which is available during regular gallery hours). TTFN!
